Coaching Staff Responsibilities

COACHING STAFF

Coaching staff are responsible for helping grow, improve and foster the game of lacrosse, while providing all youth in our community the opportunity to train and compete at the highest level of play. All coaching staff are required to read and follow all rules and regulations, by-laws, and associated policies relevant to their role, including but not limited to:

PRMLA Constitution and By-Laws
PRMLA Code of Conduct
OLA Operating Policies
OLA By-Laws
OLA Rules and Regulations

Any coaching staff that are found in violation of PRMLA and OLA rules and regulations, by-laws and associated policies, may be subject to Disciplinary Processes.

COACHING STAFF POSITIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

HEAD COACHES:

The primary role of a Head Coach is to teach, guide, and help develop players. The secondary roles are to evaluate, recruit and mentor players and other coaches.

Duties include:

  • Adhere and enforce the PRMLA Constitution and the Code of Conduct for all players, parents, and bench staff.
  • Teach lacrosse skills, promote the game of lacrosse, and utilize common rules of good sportsmanship.
Ensure safety of all players at all times, on and off the floor.
Be present and available in advance of game times to avoid delays.
Ensure that all players and bench staff are registered prior to the beginning of the season. Ensure all bench staff are properly certified. Confirm with the PRMLA Registrar that this is done.
  • Ensure that all players and bench staff are correctly added to GameSheet. The PRMLA will provide the head coach with the team's GameSheet access key, which will allow the Head Coach and/or Team Manager to input these rosters.
Submit the OLA Roster Form to the PRMLA Registrar as soon as your team has been selected. The PRMLA Registrar will submit the Rosters no later than June 10th.
  • Apply directly to the tournaments you wish to attend for the season and liaise with the PRMLA Treasurer to send payment. Tournament lists are published by the OLA in January/February. Tournament registrations are opened by the OLA in February/March prior to the beginning of the season. Applications must be done immediately upon registration opening as spots fill up quickly.
  • Work with your coaching staff and Team Manager to create and discuss Team Budget items.
Openly communicate with parents/guardians and players at the beginning of the season to discuss expectations of players and parents, budget and finances, team rules, tournament information, and any other relevant information regarding the upcoming season. It is expected that each team will hold a parent meeting with all coaches and parents, shortly after team selections have been made, to discuss the above noted information. Members from the PRMLA Executive/Directors will attend these meetings to review Codes of Conduct for Players, Coaches and Parents.
  • Ensure dressing rooms are left in the same way found. Any damage to a dressing room at home or away, should be reported to PRMLA immediately.
  • Report any conflicts or concerns from players, parents or coaches to the Risk Management Director. Any issues shall be assessed and reviewed according to the PRMLA Disciplinary Process and Complaint Submission.
  • If risk of harm/abuse is witnessed or suspected, the head coach WILL ensure that this is reported to the Risk Management Director immediately.
  • If a team has extenuating circumstances where a full roster of players are unable to attend a scheduled game, the Team Manager and/or Head Coach MUST notify the PRMLA Scheduler along with the President and/or the VP, of the conflict.

ASSISTANT COACHES:

The primary role of an Assistant Coach is to support the Head Coach in teaching, guiding, and developing players as well as any other responsibilities as delegated by the Head Coach.

  • In the absence of the Head Coach, it is the assistant coach's responsibility to reinforce the objectives of the team and carry out the duties of the Head Coach.

TRAINERS:

The primary role of a Trainer is to implement effective risk management on their own teams, where safety is the priority on and off the floor.

Duties include:

  • Utilizing a proactive, preventative approach to safety while being prepared to react in the event of accidents, injuries or medical emergencies.
  • Utilizing pre-game/practice warm-up activities and stretching routines.
  • Collecting and maintaining Medical Information Forms for all team players.
  • Completing an Emergency Action Plan for each facility their team practices and plays at.
  • Having a well-stocked trainer's bag, first aid kit, and lacrosse binder with player medical information available at all team activities. If the kit is low on supplies, it is the trainer’s responsibility to contact the PRMLA Equipment Manager for more supplies.
  • Required to be present at all on and off floor activities. It is strongly recommended to have a backup trainer so that a trainer is present with the team for all practices and games. It is the role of the teams designated trainer to ensure that a substitute is present in their absence.
  • Ensuring all players have the required protective equipment and that all pieces of equipment are in good repair, see OLA Box Lacrosse Equipment Guidelines.
